The feeling of stagnation.Standing still. To repeat oneself.
Many people are trapped in their hamster wheel, doing the same thing every day, because it is relaxed, simple, and secure. Because it is familiar and sufficient. But isn’t there so much more to this world? Do we want to miss all the other new and beautiful things on this planet just because our actual life is so comfortable? After all, we only live once.
This one life is our chance to have the human experience, to be free, to have fun, and to put our energy into things that we love and make our lives worth living. Even though it sounds a bit cliché, it pretty well describes my feelings towards the end of 2016. So far I had photographed over eighty ‘homestories’ in less than two years. Not the most beautiful locations, the greatest outfits, or even the best models could really
motivate me to continue with these kinds of photos. Somehow I had already done everything, seen it all, and found myself in my own personal hamster wheel, doing the same thing over and over again. In the end I felt that only the models and locations had ever changed. It just didn’t make me happy anymore. It’s not that I didn’t like the results, on the contrary, they were wonderful, but there had to be more.

I decided to take a creative break – one that wouldn’t last long. One beautiful morning the same year, I stumbled into the photo studio with my coffee and was greeted by a wonderful light that shone through the floor to ceiling windows and onto the dark floor. The mixture of the the curtains and the bright, warm sunbeams created a beautiful play of light and shadow, which took my heart by storm.
And so I went out of the apartments and beds, and into the studio. One room, multiple backdrops. Without a f lash, but with the light that only the sun could give me. With many simple and inexpensive means, I set my mind to letting off steam creatively and disregarding all existing rules. To try something new, to be free, to have fun. And I did! I can recommend to everyone that they take a look outside the box and try something new every once in a while.
With this book I record my own little rebellion for eternity.
REVIEW
Krolop & Gerst
